Even if you don’t plan on going far this summer, it’s still important to remember that prevention is key in keeping your home safe while you are away. This is why we’ve provided a list of things to do before you leave home for a few days or weeks:

(1)

Make sure the grass is cut and your mail is picked up. A stack of newspapers at the entrance lets thieves know they that the coast is clear.

(2)

Leave a few lights on inside and outside with timers to make it seem like there is someone. If a neighbor can park in your driveway, even better.

(3)

Ask someone to come over your house every few days. This person could also water plants and take care of the animals, if they are willing to visit every day.

(4)

Unplug electrical appliances that do not need to be on while you are away, such as the dishwasher, dryer, television, computer, etc.

(5)

Turn off the hot water tank and turn off the washer faucets and the main water valve.

(6)

Just before leaving, go around to check that all windows, doors, and patio doors are properly closed and locked. Activate the alarm system.

Remember that if you are leaving for more than 30 consecutive days, you must notify your insruance broker.
